Echorer Dalna: Bengali Jackfruit Curry Delight

Recipe for Echorer Dalna (Bengali Jackfruit Curry):


- 1 cup raw jackfruit (echor), peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
- 2 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
- 2-3 green chilies, slit
- 1/2 cup yogurt (dahi)
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1 teaspoon red chili powder (adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons mustard oil
- Fresh coriander leaves for garnish


1. Prepare the Jackfruit:
- Peel the raw jackfruit and remove the inner white core.
- Cut the jackfruit into bite-sized pieces.
- Boil the jackfruit pieces with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt until they are tender. Drain and set aside.

2. Fry the Potatoes:
- Heat 2 tablespoons of mustard oil in a pan over medium heat.
- Add the potato chunks and fry until they turn golden brown. Remove and set aside.

3. Prepare the Curry:
- In the same pan, add a bit more mustard oil if needed.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
- Add the chopped tomatoes and cook until they become soft and the oil starts to separate.
- Add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, and salt. Sauté for a couple of minutes until the spices are well incorporated.

4. Add Jackfruit and Potatoes:
- Add the boiled jackfruit pieces and fried potatoes to the pan. Mix them well with the spices.

5. Create a Yogurt Mixture:
- In a separate bowl, whisk the yogurt until it's smooth.
- Slowly add the yogurt to the pan while stirring continuously. This prevents the yogurt from curdling.

6. Simmer the Curry:
- Add a cup of water and bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the curry thickens.

7. Garnish and Serve:
- Sprinkle garam masala powder over the curry and mix well.
- Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and slit green chilies.
- Serve Echorer Dalna hot with steamed rice or parathas.
